OUR STORY
Built from the Ground Up
Coastal Maine General Contracting was founded by Matthew Gurney, whose interest in carpentry began at an early age while growing up in Central Maine.
During high school, Matthew worked on remodeling projects for friends and family, developing a hands-on understanding of construction that eventually led him to pursue a degree in business management.
While completing his degree, he spent five years working in the civil engineering field, gaining valuable experience in planning, technical problem-solving, and the complexities involved in bringing a project together.
In 2006, Matthew incorporated Coastal Maine General Contracting, Inc.
What began as a small remodeling business has since grown into an established general contracting company serving residential, commercial, and industrial clients throughout Maine.
Today, CMGC continues to grow while remaining grounded in the principles that shaped the company from the beginning: attention to detail, skilled craftsmanship, honest communication, and doing the work right.

OUR LEADERSHIP
I’ve spent my career developing an understanding of both the hands-on and technical sides of construction.
I started with carpentry and remodeling before pursuing a degree in business management and spending five years in the civil engineering field.
In 2006, I founded Coastal Maine General Contracting, and since then, I’ve had the opportunity to lead the company through significant growth across residential, commercial, and industrial construction.
What has always drawn me to this industry is the complexity of it. Every project brings new challenges, details to work through, and problems that require thoughtful solutions.
After all these years, I still believe the details matter. Taking the time to think ahead, solve problems, and do things right the first time continues to shape how I lead and how we approach every project at CMGC.

We also believe a strong construction culture requires a serious commitment to safety and continuous improvement. CMGC provides ongoing jobsite training, regular safety meetings, and training in areas such as fall protection, scaffolding, forklifts, aerial lifts, power tools, CPR, first aid, OSHA 10, OSHA 30, and regulatory updates.
